An ancient system for understanding everything

Wu Xing, an ancient Chinese philosophical system, explains the movements, phases, transformations, and relationships of all things in the universe.

The Five Elements — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth — are associated with the five classical planets: Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn. Together, they were believed to represent the fundamental forces that shape the cycles of life.

These energies are the foundation of all things, expressed through five essential qualities: Growth, Ignition, Nurturing, Refinement, and Flow.

The five elements

What each element means

  • 金  Metal — represents iron and physical form, while also symbolizing clarity, focus, structure, and purpose in thought.
  • 木  Wood — symbolizes growth and renewal, reflecting both the vitality of trees and the pursuit of new beginnings.
  • 水  Water — is expressed through streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans, carrying qualities of calmness, fluidity, and healing.
  • 火  Fire — represents a powerful force associated with confidence, passion, and outward expression. Bold, dynamic, and radiant.
  • 土  Earth — represents protection and grounding, reflecting the stability, nourishment, and nurturing qualities of soil.

Five Element philosophy

Reflected in daily life

For centuries, Five Element philosophy has shaped how we understand the body, nature, and the rhythms of living.

Relationship and transformation

The two fundamental cycles

The five elements do not exist in isolation. They move together through two continuous cycles of relationship and transformation.

The Generative Cycle

How each element nourishes the next

  • Wood feeds Fire — as fuel, giving it heat and life
  • Fire creates Earth — ash returning to soil, forming new ground
  • Earth forms Metal — minerals compressed and shaped within the earth
  • Metal collects Water — filtering and purifying as it flows
  • Water nourishes Wood — feeding roots, enabling growth to begin again

The Generative Cycle is continuous — each element gives rise to the next in an unbroken circle of creation.

The Controlling Cycle

How each element keeps the others in check

  • Wood depletes Earth — roots drawing nutrients from soil
  • Earth contains Water — banks and ground holding water in place
  • Water extinguishes Fire — cooling and calming its heat
  • Fire melts Metal — transforming its form through intense heat
  • Metal shapes Wood — the blade that cuts and gives form

The Controlling Cycle is not destructive — it is the balance that prevents any single element from dominating. Both cycles together create harmony.

How we read the elements

Color as language

Color frequency is the main determinant factor under the Five Elements crystal system, while crystalline structure and chemical composition refine ambiguous cases.

  • 金  Metal — whites and clear tones. Clear quartz and white phantom quartz, bringing focus and refinement.
  • 木  Wood — shades of green. Growth, expansion, and vitality through green phantom quartz, jade, and natural wooden beads.
  • 水  Water — blues and blacks. Grounding and protective, embodied by obsidian, aquamarine, and moonstone.
  • 火  Fire — reds and violets. Full of warmth and transformation, seen in sunstone, amethyst, and rose quartz.
  • 土  Earth — warm, steady hues. Centering and nourishing, through citrine and gray rutilated quartz.
